Neverwinter Nights/Hordes of the Underdark

Posted by Mike on December 22, 2008

Don’t have much time on holiday for this, but Hordes was one of the best FRPGs I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing on the story level, really good, mostly Forgotten Realms but a nice chunk of Planescape too, my favorite part of the AD&D universe. Then I made the mistake of going for a user created module called Sands of Fate 1: Shadows Over Heliopolis or something like that, which was one of the most viciously difficult things I’ve ever attempted. At one point, I realized I wasn’t enjoying it anymore, probably way longer than I should have so I hung it up. I wanted to post my comments on it in a forum and then IE crashed on me. Had that happened before I decided to quit I might have invented a new swear word. Dozens of commenters saying they beat the thing in 15 hours made me feel like I’m a gaming moron! RIP Bud Shank.

Amazing news and advances in evolutionary science

Posted by Mike on December 17, 2008

Huge new fossil find

Looks like it was really volcanos and not an asteroid

I’m just particularly amazed how much news on this front has come out in the last 6 months and how all of it is summarily ignored by creationists. You’d have to have your fingers in your ears and your eyes closed at this point.

Subterranean Press takes care of Jack Vance

Posted by Mike on December 15, 2008

I really thought Lurulu would turn out to be the last of Vance’s books, given the writer’s blindness and longer gaps between books, but Subterranean are going to be publishing the man’s autobiography! I wonder if the Integral Edition will be adding another volume? Anyway, it might sound sort of boring but Vance is a big traveller, was in the military and seems to have all sorts of stories to tell and the book will have lots of photos. Vance is just about my favorite writer (with Leiber) so I’m pretty thrilled over this…

Computer Up plus the latest

Posted by Mike on December 15, 2008

As of last Friday evening, my computer is back up and running again, which means it was out about 5 days. Things went relatively well, I got a diagnosis saying it was the button on the front panel, which meant I had to order a new front part from Dell and Dell delivered very quickly with two day mail. To have discovered this myself would have been to do what needed to be done in replacing it, basically removing the plastic cover from the entire machine. In replacing it (credit to my old man who’s very good at this kind of thing), it was discovered the metal piece that triggers the power button had broken off. With a new front and requisite cleaning the machine looks almost brand new. Really, about the only thing I missed, given computer access at work, was just quickly checking the news when I got up in the morning or before I went to bed.

But it has been part of a string of really rotten luck of late, the kind of bad luck that looks humorous with some distance (which I don’t quite have yet). Read the rest of this entry »

Computer Down

Posted by Mike on December 8, 2008

In probably the worst ongoing case of Murphy’s Law I’ve ever experienced, my PC went down yesterday morning. I think it’s the power supply and it’s now at the shop and hopefully will be up in the next day or two. I honestly can’t believe how much has gone wrong in the last few days, it’s now to the comical point. I imagine these are the times that people used to blame curses on…

Oblivion II

Posted by Mike on December 3, 2008

I’ve reemerged after a week or so off around Thanksgiving week. While I did get some time in with family (including my voluntary and periodic beatings given by my nephews), a great deal of my time was spent in the thrall of this brilliant game. I’m now basically done with the Main quest, am the head of the Fighter, Mage and Thieves Guilds, have finished all but the last Daedric Quest and have done all the Dark Brotherhood quests from Vampire Vincent. I’ve completed all of the town quests, but have probably missed quite a few of the settlement and miscellaneous quests. I also became a paladin of sorts with the Knights of the Nine expansion and just started Shivering Isles Monday morning, after I woke up and couldn’t go back to sleep. Read the rest of this entry »
